Art To-Go: Street Art

Art To-Go: Street Art

–The author of The Guerilla Art Kit, Keri Smith, explains guerilla art in her own words… “as any anonymous work (including but not limited to graffiti, signage, performance, additions, and decoration) installed, performed, or attached in public space, with the distinct purpose of affecting the world in a creative or thought-provoking way. (p. 11)”

I have always loved hiding (and finding) out that I’ve made around the communities in which I’ve lived. I’d like to share that joy with others as we make some simple crafts together. Painting rocks and creating Artist Trading Cards are just a couple of the projects we’ll make, along with some simple crafts from Keri Smith’s book, mentioned above. Many of these can be done at home with supplies you would already have on hand.

During the last 30-45 minutes of class we’ll go out into town to leave our creations! It’s so much fun to do this activity with others who see the value in brightening someone’s day in an unexpected way! Join me and fellow students in “taking our ‘art’ to the street of Bridgton!”–

Please join local artist Kim Dubay for a workshop here August 31st 9:00-noon. Want to try it before the workshop? Pick up one of our To-Go kits, available to bring home. Ask at the Main Circulation Desk for more information.

We Love July!

We Love July!

We know that summer is the time to relax and catch up with family and friends. We hope you stop by the Library and check out some of these great activities when you are in the neighborhood! We have seeds to start, cooking tools to create wonderful meals, activity kits for kids and families to explore new ideas, museum passes for checkout, and of course some great books to challenge and entertain.

Our Summer Reading program is Read for the Stars, and Miss Samantha has been hard at work planning some amazing, out-of-this-world activities for tots through teens. Join us for 6 weeks of reading, story trail walks, crafts, raffles, and parties. Brochures are available at the circulation desks and on our website, www.bridgtonlibrary.org/youth-services.

The Friends of the Bridgton Library Annual Book Sale is in the courtyard on Saturday July 6th from 9:00am-1:00pm. There is a rain date of Saturday July 20th. And if you are interested in joining the Friends of the Bridgton Library, brochures are available at the Main Circulation Desk and online, just click on Friends of the Library on our website.

We are excited to announce that the Bridgton Community Band will be performing in our courtyard on Wednesday, July 17th and 24th, 7:00-8:30. Please join us for two evenings of uplifting music in a beautiful setting.

Explore SoulCollage®, Art Journaling, Mail Art, and Guerrilla Art by taking one of our new To-Go kits home and giving it a try. Instructions and materials are included. And if you want to connect with the artists who created these inspiring projects, sign up for their workshops, happening here through August.

We also are pleased to announce author and poet Richard Blanco will be here Saturday, August 17th. Pre-registration will be available in July. Our full summer calendar of events is available on our website, www.bridgtonlibrary.org/calendar, and we make sure to include them in our monthly newsletters, too!
