Chills & Thrills – October Staff Picks

Looking for something perfectly spooky to curl up with for Halloween? Our Of Interest shelf is full of Chills & Thrills—handpicked by Bridgton Public Library staff for readers who love a good scare, a haunting mystery, or a touch of the supernatural.

Here are a few highlights from this month’s selection:

Dracula by Bram Stoker – The classic Gothic tale that started it all. Sink your teeth into the chilling story of Count Dracula, where fog-drenched castles, mysterious letters, and creeping shadows still send shivers more than a century later.

Pearl by Tabitha King – Set right here in Maine, this dark and atmospheric story follows a woman whose quiet life unravels after a tragedy, revealing the eerie undercurrents of small-town secrets.

Alice Isn’t Dead by Joseph Fink – From one of the creators of Welcome to Night Vale comes a surreal road-trip thriller about a truck driver searching for her missing wife—and uncovering a conspiracy that stretches across America’s strangest highways.

Ghostwalk by Rebecca Stott – A beautifully written literary thriller that weaves together history, science, and ghostly intrigue surrounding the life of Isaac Newton.

Whether you like your scares classic, psychological, or simply strange, there’s something here to keep you turning pages long past sunset.

Discover the Stories Beneath the Stones: Bridgton’s 3rd Annual Historic Cemetery Tour

Step back in time and uncover the fascinating history of Bridgton through the lives of those who helped shape it at Bridgton Historical Society’s 3rd Annual Historic Cemetery Tour on October 31st, hosted by Mike Davis.

Join us on Friday, October 31 at 1:00 PM for a guided tour through one of Bridgton’s oldest and most storied burial grounds, the South Bridgton Cemetery (Adams Pond Yard). Together, we’ll uncover the fascinating lives and legacies of the people who helped shape South Bridgton’s early community.

Explore Local History Up Close

This year’s tour will once again be led by local historian Mike Davis, who has spent decades researching Bridgton’s past and sharing its stories. In partnership with the Bridgton Public Library, Mike will guide visitors through the headstones, telling the tales of early settlers, local veterans, and notable figures whose names still echo through town history.

The Adams Pond Yard (Est. 1811)—surrounded by forest and filled with centuries-old stones—offers a peaceful setting to reflect on the town’s enduring heritage. Each marker tells a story of the people who lived, worked, and built the foundations of this community more than two hundred years ago.
