Celebrate National Reading Month

Celebrate National Reading Month

March is Celebrate National Reading Month with Read Across America, a project of the National Education Association. They have put together book lists around themes to celebrate every month and encourage young readers to explore new ideas and themes. Find lists celebrating National Reading Month, Women’s History Month, and Pi Day (March 14th)

For March the theme is Cultivate Compassion. Remember, reading diverse books helps students walk in someone’s shoes and think about how other people may feel. Talk about what they read and how to put their compassion into action.

Recommended titles include:

  • Elementary- Tiara’s Hat Parade by Kelly Starling Lyons
  • Middle Grade- Each Tiny Spark by Pablo Cartaya
  • Young Adult- They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, Justin Eisinger, and Steven Scott

And get ready for April’s book list when Read Across America explores books that Inspire Stewardship.

Getting ready for the Iditarod in YS

Getting ready for the Iditarod in YS

We’ve been busy in youth services getting ready for March! It can be a very long month, so we’ve been planning some fun around the Iditarod. Our Culture To-Go bags will be all about the Iditarod, with some interesting fun facts, history and cultural information, and craft ideas. We will have Aurora Borealis art kits all ready for you to pick up (this one’s a little messy but very beautiful). These will be available on March 1st while supplies last.

We’ll also have an Iditarod Leader Board in Youth Services for our young readers. Sign up on Bridgton Library Beanstack or pick up paper reading and activity logs. Want to make it simple? Sign up for Simple Registration and we’ll keep track of the number of books your child checks out and move them along the trail through the month. We know that different kids read at different levels at different times, so we’ll have more stops for those reading picture books. For Simple Registration just call (207-647-2472), email (bplreference@bridgton.lib.me.us) or ask at the desk and we’ll set you up.

And soon enough, it will be Spring 🙂
