Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The library is supporting the efforts of Bridgton’s Family Crisis Services in raising awareness and providing services for those affected by domestic violence.  They have loaned us some books to display, and provided us with pamphlets and bookmarks to distribute.  Nationally, the week of October 16-22 has been designated National Week of Action, and Thursday, October 22 is Wear Purple Day.  Many businesses along Main Street will have purple gels on their exterior lights in support of DVAM. Family Crisis Services partnered with the Town of Bridgton and Lake Region TV to produce a 7 minute interview about domestic violence, which can be viewed here.

Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week

The American Library Association celebrates the freedom to read during its annual Banned Books Week event. The books on their lists represent titles that have been targeted with removal or restrictions in libraries and schools. The reasons for the challenges are varied, as illustrated in the wordle. Challenged titles are equally as varied, from classics to Captain Underpants. Check out the frequently challenged book lists and see how many you have read!
